Decoding Unusual HVAC Sounds
HVAC units typically emit a sound, but it is usually so low most homeowners have been accustomed to it without even noticing. It however is a different issue when suddenly, the HVAC makes sounds that are unusual.

The San Diego HVAC Contractors Association says when this happens, homeowners should listen closely so they would know what to report to their HVAC service technician. Any loud or unusual sound should be immediately reported to a technician says the SDHCA, as this may point to an operational issue.

Home Insurance Provider American Home Shield has identified various noises an HVAC May emit, and what they could mean. One of the sounds they identified in their article is a Clicking sound.

“The clicking of electrical components at start-up and shutdown is a normal part of the system’s operation, but constant or ongoing clicking is not typical. It could be a sign of a defective control or a failing thermostat. There are a lot of electrical parts in your unit, so it’s critical to pay attention to potential electrical issues as soon as possible before you have bigger issues on your hand.”

Loud HVAC Noises

Third-Party Service Ratings Website Angie’s List also published a similar guide in their website. One of the sounds that they have mentioned is a squealing sound. Like the SDHCA they emphasized that HVAC sounds should immediately be reported to an HVAC technician as it signifies issues that may just blow out of proportion if it goes unattended.

“Squealing noises from the blower motor can indicate a bad belt or motor bearing problems. Belts are not normally an expensive repair. They should be replaced before they break; if they do break, your blower will no longer turn. Many blower motor units have oil ports for adding lubricant; others are sealed.”

Popping HVAC Sound

Inspectapedia meanwhile warned homeowners about popping or popcorn sounds emanating from their HVAC units. According to one of their article guides on noise HVAC diagnoses, a popping sound can mean something serious about the HVAC system and should immediately be relayed to a technician.

“You should shut off the system immediately and leave it off until an experienced HVAC service tech has diagnosed the problem, hoping that we might avoid destroying the compressor motor.”

The SDHCA emphasizes that noisy and unusual HVAC sounds should be immediately referred to the homeowner’s trusted HVAC Contractor. According to the group, HVACs are designed to operate silently, and so whatever noise it may emit should be always considered as out of the ordinary.
